SMLI Summer Science Experience- Nursery-1st Grade

Join the Science Museum of Long Island this summer for a new exciting mix of science education, adventure, and just plain outdoor fun! Each week focuses on a specific scientific topic.

Session 1 July 2-6, 2018 - Superpowered Species 

Get up close and personal with our animals as we learn about their incredible adaptations, then journey into our beautiful preserve to see our local flora and fauna in action! 

Session 2, July 9-13 2018 - Weird ‘n Wacky Science

How do you make stuff fizzle, change color, or blow up? How do magnets work? What exactly is electricity?  We’ll answer these questions and more as we explore some of the weirder aspects of science! 

Session 3, July 16-20 2018 - Guardians of the Galaxy

Venture into the great unknown in this space-filled week of adventure! Learn how rockets work and what astronaut life is like on the International Space Station. Head into StarLab, our in-house planetarium, to tour our galaxy as we discuss the planets, stars, and constellation myths! 

Session 4, July 23-27, 2018 - Fun with Forensics

There is a mystery afoot, and it’s up to you to solve it! Explore techniques used by real forensic scientists to gather all the clues and figure out whodunnit! 

Session 5, July 30-Aug 3, 2018 - “Just Beach-y!”

Take to the sea! Discover the many creatures that live right across the road on the beaches of Manhasset Bay. Dig for crabs, catch fish, and explore this vibrant ecosystem!

Session 6, August 6-10, 2018 - Kids Vs. Wild

Put away that iPad and live as the pioneers did! Make your own butter, candles, and soap without fancy technology. Discover how to thrive in the wilderness as we identify edible plants, build fires, and create shelters!

Session 7, August 13-17, 2018 - Blast from the Past

Travel back in time as we explore our planet’s past and the dinosaurs that called it home. Head to our paleontology lab to identify real fossils, and even make your own! “Rock out” with our extensive mineral collection as you learn about the forces that transformed the world around you.

Session 8, August 20-24, 2018 - Scientific Smorgasbord

Do you love all things science? Then this week is for you! Dip your toes into all sorts of topics in this wild concoction of curiosity!
