PRESIDENT’S BREAK WEEK ACTIVITIES at Garvies Point

Join us for some special wintertime fun during winter break! WINTER NATURE WEEK Brave the elements as we discover the woods in the winter season! Please dress accordingly. All walks/programs are within 1 hour in duration. Our goal is to offer SAFE, fun, and engaging, crafts and programs for adults, children and families during this difficult time. MASKS are required for ages 4 & older to enter the museum as well as during programs, crafts, and films.

Saturday, February 13 GREAT BACKYARD BIRD COUNT ● 10am - 4pm, ongoing Be a citizen scientist for a day and put your bird-watching skills to work! Participate by counting numbers and species of birds around the preserve and at our birdfeeders. All skill levels welcome. Reference guide of common birds and binoculars are available. No charge for participation, regular museum admission applies. FOR THE LOVE OF NATURE WALK ● 11am, 1pm, 3pm What is it about nature that people love so much? Experience the winter woodland preserve as we discover the beauty, joy and love of nature all around us. VALENTINE WATERCOLOR & WAX PAINTING ● 10am - 4pm, on the ½ hour Make a unique & beautiful valentine using crayons and watercolors with a cool natural twig frame! Film: Stranger in the Woods: The Movie (25 mins.) ● 10am, 12pm, 2pm

Tuesday, February 16 WATER, SNOW & ICE WALK ● 11am, 1pm, 3pm Why does winter occur? How do snowflakes form? What are some interesting properties of snow and ice? Explore the field and woods plus learn some cool snow experiments! Ages 5+ 3D-SNOWFLAKE CRAFT ● 10am - 4pm, on the ½ hour Make a unique snowflake to hang in your window, room, or anywhere in your house! Film: All About Rain, Snow, Sleet & Hail (23 mins.) ● 10am, 12pm, 2pm

Wednesday, February 17 ANIMAL SIGNS & TRACKS WALK ● 11am, 1pm, 3pm Be a nature detective! Signs of animal activity are everywhere you look in the field and woods, all you need to do is use the power of observation. How do animals survive the cold of winter? Learn to identify common animal tracks with or without snow on the ground! Ages 5+ ANIMAL TRACKS BOOKLET CRAFT ● 10am - 4pm, on the ½ hour Make a useful flip book to identify local animal tracks. Film: Snowbound, Animals of Winter (60 mins.) ● 10am, 12pm, 2pm Film: All About Animal Adaptations (23 mins.) ● 11:30am, 1:30pm, 3:30pm

Thursday, February 18 TREES & PLANTS IN WINTER WALK ● 11am, 1pm, 3pm Looks can be deceiving; even though trees look dead in wintertime, they are still living! How do herbaceous plants survive the winter? Learn the answers plus how to be a twig detective & more! Ages 5+ WINTER WOOLAND PICTURE CRAFT ● 10am - 4pm, on the ½ hour Film: All About Plant Adaptations (23 mins.) ● 10am, 12pm, 2pm

Friday, February 19 WINTER BIRDS WALK & BIRD FEEDERS ● 11am, 1pm, 3pm How do small animals like birds survive such cold weather? Learn about interesting adaptations as we discover our resident birds who live at the preserve all winter long. Plus, learn how to attract birds to your yard using birdfeeders. Ages 5+ BIRD-FEEDER CRAFT ● 10am - 4pm, on the ½ hour Film: All About Birds (23 mins.) ● 10am, 12pm, 2pm

Saturday, February 20 GARVIES GEOLOGY PRESERVE & BEACH WALK ● 10am, 12pm, 2pm The beach at our preserve is an unaltered, natural beach with fascinating local geology not found in so limited an area on the entire island. Learn about our unique geology! Ages 6+ INVESTIGATING ROCKS and MINERALS PROGRAM ● 11am, 1pm, 3pm Join us as we discover the properties of minerals and how they make up rocks. Students will perform scientific tests on mineral samples plus learn interesting special mineral properties. Ages 7+ SAND & PEBBLE MOSAIC CRAFT ● 10am - 4pm, on the ½ hour With some inspiration and your imagination make a piece of artwork using on sand and pebbles! All ages. Film: All About Rocks & Minerals (30 mins.) ● 11am, 1pm, 3pm
