Are you passionate about important social topics and silenced issues? Can you see robots taking over the world, or creatures trying to steal each other’s land? Science fiction and fantasy are generative spaces for social justice dialogue. Start a novel or strengthen one already begun, or even finish a short story during this weeklong exploration of new ways to see writing as resilience and breaking silence. |
Writers & Books |
When we’re young, stories, books, and poems are our first doorway into a magical world. This camp celebrates exploring our imaginations and imaginary worlds. By engaging with such stories as Malcolm Mitchell’s “The Magician’s Hat,” Mac Barnett’s “Extra Yarn,” Grace Lin’s “A Big Mooncake for Little Star,” Nancy Tupper-Ling’s “The Yin-Yang Sisters” and “Dragon Frightful,” and other exciting tales, we will read, do arts and crafts projects, play theatre games, and more. |
Writers & Books |
Do you think one person can change the world? What about a kid or a young adult? This creative camp provides a safe space for youth to raise their voices through writing and public speaking and an opportunity to build on the momentum of national and global energy, where young people are organizing around causes important to them and making real change happen. We’ll engage in exciting conversation, write our hearts out, and design creative ways to share our messages with a larger audience. |
Writers & Books |
So you want to write a book, but you need a plan? Learn how to plot a book chapter by chapter, taking your great idea and turning it into a juicy plot. We’ll access resources from a variety of arts & cultural organizations, and observe how ordinary people and places can help you bring your book’s characters to life and become heroes and villains. We’ll study craft using our personal copies of Ralph Fletcher’s Live Writing, our guide to becoming better writers. |

Are you passionate about important social dialogues? Do you want to incorporate a more diverse and inclusive range of characters, but aren’t sure how? We will discuss important strategies for writing characters outside your own experiences in ways that are respectful and aimed at understanding multiple perspectives and ways of being. Feel free to bring with you a project you are already working on, such as a novel, outline, or short story. |
Writers & Books |
Are stories constantly running through your imagination? Get your ideas out of your head and onto paper! In this camp we will learn what makes a good story by exploring such essential elements as character, plot, setting, conflict, and more. In this welcoming and friendly virtual environment, we’ll learn, write, and share. Come with an armful of ideas or just a desire to write, and we’ll create together. |
Writers & Books |
We are living in a time of unprecedented reckoning. A global pandemic has turned our world upside down. More light is being shed on inequities and racial and social injustice. Through the ages, in times of uncertainty, people have turned to reading and writing to make sense of their experiences or to create a historical record. Reading prompts us to understand perspectives different from our own and helps us feel less alone when we connect with words that describe our own experiences. |
