My Life: The Musical - This is your life; let’s make it a musical.
Ages 9 – 12: July 8 – 12
Ages 7 – 9: July 15 – 19
In this camp, students will work together with a teaching artist to create and perform their very own musical! In addition to developing ideas for an original script, students will learn standard songs and choreography that culminate in a presentation on the Bay Street Theater Mainstage on Friday for family and friends. Students will receive instruction in acting, singing, dance, and musical theater history; and they will also participate in creative theater games and improvisations that help to develop communication skills and encourage them to stretch their imaginative abilities.
TEACHING ARTIST: Kristen Poulakis
Kristen Poulakis is a vocal coach, piano instructor and song writing advocate for students of all ages. She teaches privately here on the East End of Long Island, when she's not in the theatre. She is also a choreographer and dancer. She taught several styles of dance at the Dance Centre of the Hamptons. Kristen co-owned/directed two musical theatre companies, ACT Out East as well as East End Children’s Theatre company at the Vail Leavitt Music Hall where she produced several musicals. Kristen’s formal training in dance and voice began in Boston, where she grew up, as well as at the Broadway Dance Centre in Manhattan. She attended the prestigious colleges, The Boston Conservatory of Music as well as The Berklee School of Music. She inevitably decided to make the move out West to graduate from a buddhist based college, Naropa University in Boulder Colorado where she earned a degree in Vocal Performance and Music Therapy. Kristen has been a Music Director, and most recently a Director of the Children’s Musical Theatre productions at Westhampton Performing Arts Center for several years. Kristen is thrilled to be back at Bay Street Theater for another fun summer!
My Favorite Tales!
Ages 4-7: July 8 - 12
In this new camp, students will bring their favorite fairy tales to life on stage! Participants will learn the basic theater principles of focus, concentration and working with a partner. Then, with the assistance of a master teaching artist, the group will adapt their favorite fairy tales and myths into a presentation that will be performed for friends and family on the final day of camp!
TEACHING ARTIST: Teresa DeBerry
Teresa DeBerry has been a theater educator and professional actor, director and choreographer throughout the Eastern United States for 40 years. She taught for the Alliance Theater in Atlanta, Georgia for 20 years; where she was part of the team that created and implementing their most successful summer theater performance program for young actors.Teresa also created and taught the first professional teen ensemble in Atlanta for Horizon Theater Company. She taught Theater and Dance full time for The Westminster Schools, where she also was part of the team that created, Odyssey, a performing arts inspired summer enrichment program for inner city students ages 8-18. Teresa has taught, directed and choreographed for Georgia Shakespeare, Theater in the Square, Georgia Tech and Emory University, where she co-taught a Shakespeare in Performance class with world famous author, Salman Rushdi. Teresa has taught for Cleveland Playhouse, Great Lakes Shakespeare, Florida State University, Galloway School, Georgia Ensemble Theater, and Theater in the Square. Teresa has a long history of coaching national finalists and winners in the English Speaking Union's High School Shakespeare Competition. As a professional actor Teresa has performed with The Alliance Theater, Cleveland Playhouse, Georgia Shakespeare, Cleveland Public Theater, Karamu Theater, Theater Emory, Oberlin Summer Theater Festival, Theater in the Square and Horizon Theater among many others. Teresa is also an experienced audio book narrator, with more than 60 titles to her credit. She is very excited to share her experience and talent with the students at Bay Street Theater
Improv Camp “Yes And…Improv!”
Ages 9 – 12: July 22 - July 26
Do you like Improv games? In this brand new camp, learn about what makes these Improv games so fun and how the world of Improv relates to the world of Theater! Students will work with a teaching artist as they experiment with different forms of improvisation and use their imagination to create their very own exercises. The camp will culminate in an Improv show for family and friends to attend.
TEACHING ARTIST: Suzanne Clifton-Walsh
Suzanne Clifton Walsh is a Theatre Specialist.
After studying Acting at Eugene O'Neill National Theatre Institute & Connecticut College, she transferred to NYU where she graduated with a BA & MA in Educational Theatre.
She has taught drama and public speaking to students of all ages. She has also directed numerous musicals and plays. Her 40 year teaching career in New York City included the founding of a very popular summer multi-arts program called CREATIVE ARTS. Supervising a staff of 50 artists and an enrollment of about 200 children, Suzanne also instituted a Guest Artist program for the campers. Renowned actors, musicians, athletes and costume designers visited the camp and shared their experiences at daily Noontime Shows!
Suzanne always looked forward to visiting Bay Street during the summer. But now that she has recently relocated to Water Mill as a full time resident, she is excited to be more involved at Bay Street.
Greek Mythology: Mixed Up Myths!
Ages 4 – 7: July 22 – 26
Have you ever wondered what would happen if Aphrodite, the goddess of love, and Poseidon, the god of the sea, teamed up to pull a prank on Zeus, the king of all Greek gods? Find out in this brand new camp that lets campers use their imagination to play with and create their very own versions of the classic Greek Myths. This camp will culminate in a presentation of the campers’ original stories for family and friends to come see!
